TL; DR:
Exclusive Article: AI Replacing Mid-Level Engineers
What The HECK Did He Say?!
I'm late to the party on this one, but you likely already heard about Mark Zuckerberg on the Joe Rogan Podcast. And if you're a software developer, odds are you heard some pretty unsettling news about AI.
Well, at least how the entire Internet has summarized what Mark Zuckerberg has said:
Software engineers will CEASE TO EXIST in 2025 thanks to our AI Overlords! BE AFRAID!
Except... that's not exactly what he said. In fact, I had heard a lot of the fear mongering without actually watching the clip and formed some opinions about what I was hearing under the assumption that Zuckerberg said what people were claiming. I even thought the claim was in 5 years time, not in 2025! You can check that out here:
What he said is mostly summarized by these points:
- Probably in 2025 Meta and similar companies will have AI that can effectively be a mid level engineer that can write code
- It will be expensive to run initially (but likely costs come down over time)
- Over time, much of the code in our codebases will be written by AI
